On April 15, the 2025 United Nations (UN) Chinese Language Day event, planned and organized by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of China to the UN, the National Museum of Chinese Writing and the China Arts and Entertainment Group Ltd., kicked off at the UN Headquarters in New York. Fu Cong, Head of the Permanent Mission of China to the UN, Movses Abelian, UN Under-Secretary-General, Ivor Richard Fung, Chief of Staff of the Office of the President of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly, and Qing Boming, Director-General of the Cultural Exchange Department of the CPAFFC, attended and addressed the opening ceremony. The event saw the participation of over 400 people, including senior officials of the permanent mission of various countries to the UN, Chinese staff with the UN, and representatives of Chinese language enthusiasts in the US.
In their speeches, Chinese and foreign guests said that as one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, Chinese plays a pivotal role in the UN and is a golden key that unlocks the door to a broader world. The Chinese Language Day celebrates more than a language—it sustains intercultural dialogue and pools strength to move forward together. They urge using language as a medium to pursue dialogue instead of confrontation, resolve differences through inclusiveness, and join hands to build a community with a shared future for mankind.
At the opening ceremony, Chinese language enthusiasts in the US recited representative excerpts of ancient Chinese poems such as the Book of Songs, the Book of Changes, A Short-Song Ballad, Spring Morning, and Prelude to Water Melody, and shared their personal feelings and experiences of learning Chinese. The modern poem Tune: Riverside Immortal Light of Civilizationss, composed by the Chinese artificial intelligence platform DeepSeek for the 80th anniversary of the founding of the UN, was widely acclaimed by the participants. The event featured a performance of the Chinese song Jasmine Flower by the UN Singers upon invitation, an exhibition titled "Between the Lines: The Civilizational Code in Chinese Characters" and a VR micro-movie experience of Chinese characters, creating an immersive Chinese experience. In the evening, the Chinese Language Day Reception was held at the UN Headquarters. Chen Li, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in New York, and Cherith Norman Chalet, Assistant Secretary-General at the UN, attended the reception.
The exhibition titled Between the Lines: The Civilizational Code in Chinese Characters will remain on display at the UN Headquarters for two additional weeks. An institutional program of the CPAFFC to showcase the fine traditional Chinese culture to the outside world, it premiered in Paris, France in 2024 to resounding success.
