Robert F. Williams (1925—1996) Robert F. Williams was a leader of the African-American Civil Rights Movement in the United States. He wrote to leaders of many countries in April 1963 to seek support for the struggles by African Americans in Birmingham, Alabama. At his request, Chairman Mao Zedong issued a statement in support of their struggles against racial discrimination on August 8 of the same year. In October, Williams visited China with his family. In 1966, he settled down in China. He continued to work actively for China-US friendship even after he returned to the US in 1969.
