

西园寺公一(1906—1993) 日本著名社会活动家,中日友好事业的“掘井人”。曾在日本创办《时事》半月刊,向日本人民介绍中国工农红军长征的事迹。为反对德、意、日联盟,奔走于欧洲各国。二战结束后积极投入保卫世界和平与争取日中友好运动。1952 年首次踏上新中国的土地。1958 年冲破重重阻碍携全家定居北京,1970年回国。在北京生活的12 年中做了大量中日民间友好工作,周恩来总理誉他为“民间大使”。
Saionji Kinkazu(1906—1993) Saionji Kinkazu was a renowned Japanese social activist, and the “well-driller” of China-Japan friendship. In the fortnightly Current Affairs he initiated in Japan, he introduced to the Japanese public the Long March of the Chinese Red Army. He shuttled throughout Europe to oppose the Germany- Italy-Japan axis. After the end of World War II, he actively engaged in campaigns for world peace and Japan-China friendship. He first came to New China in 1952, and took his family to settle down in Beijing in 1958 in spite of various obstacles. He returned to Japan in 1970. During his 12 years in Beijing, he contributed a lot to developing friendship between Chinese and Japanese peoples. Premier Zhou Enlai called him “the People’s Ambassador”.
